Yeoju, South Korea

This wall was created by the Korea Ceramic Foundation as part of the 9th Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale in Korea. The theme of the biennale, Narrative: Ode to Life, showcases ceramic works from around the world that tell stories about our lives through three thematic exhibitions at three biennale venues. Among those, the Yeoju thematic exhibition Pray_Cherishing Life presents two hundred eighteen urns intended to solicit artistic sublimation and positive perceptions of life and death.

Each artist created a ‘memorial pot’ to commemorate the life of a loved one, offering viewers an opportunity to contemplate life and death. “While the practice of cremation is becoming more widespread in all over the world,” said the organizers, “this exhibition reflects changing attitude towards death and the last ceremony for life; it also reflects shifting notions of death and the idea of urns as a new haven for the soul and life as well.” By writing on the Before I Die wall installed in the middle of this exhibit, visitors were able to consider and articulate their relationship with mortality.

I want to travel around the world.

I want to express my gratitude to the people I love.

I want to make a happy family.

I want to be the artist who can express the sky.
