Built by Savannah State University's Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) and The Write Attitude

October 2015

Made with love by the QEP Team: Dr. Lisa Yount, Kiara Lewis, Adriana de Oliveira, Sierra Walton, Quortnee Jones, Ashley Bennett, and Kadeshia Ready; and Dr. Chad Faries, Professor of Creative Writing in the English, Languages and Cultures Department at Savannah State University.

The Before I Die wall was built to celebrate the National Day on Writing at Savannah State University (SSU), the oldest public historically black college in Georgia. Savannah State University, founded in 1890, is located in the historic and charming city of Savannah, Georgia.

On October 20th, 2015, Savannah State University students, faculty, and staff members celebrated writing and life in a very special way. SSU writers inspired all participants by listing their dreams, thoughts and wishes on the Before I Die wall. Also, attendees ate together, heard a TED Talk presented by Candy Chang, the creator of the Before I Die project, and listened to poetry and stories written and read by SSU students, faculty, and staff members.

A Before I Die book was offered to the best student writing on the wall. The winner was selected by a group of students, faculty, and staff members.

The Before I Die wall was brought to SSU by its Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), “The Write Attitude,” a campus-wide initiative to enhance student learning by improving attitudes about writing. The SSU Writing Center and Estuary, SSU’s literary magazine, were essential partners in this project. Special thanks to Dr. Chad Faries, Professor in the English, Languages and Cultures Department, and to the QEP Student Ambassadors, who built, painted, and maintained the wall.

* The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) established October 20 as the National Day on Writing. The idea is to celebrate writing and to recognize its importance in people’s lives.
